October is (International) Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  It is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

This is particularly poignant for me this year as one of my Mum's close friends has been (very) recently diagnosed with the disease and has undergone surgery this morning.  She's not the first person we've known to have had to endure this horrible disease (Him Indoors' cousin is also on the road to recovery after a battle with the disease last year), and unfortunately, she's unlikely to be the last.

In talking to my Mum this morning about her friend I was reminded of a post-party brunch hosted by the lovely lady in question.  Despite a bit of a hangover, she managed to rustle up a whole batch of the most delicious, melt-in-your mouth drop scones you've ever tasted!

For those of you unfamiliar with Drop Scones, they're also known as Scotch Pancakes.  They are basically small, sweet, griddled pancakes often served at teatime with butter, jam and maybe even a dollop of cream!

So, to show my support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I thought I'd share:

The cutesy raspberry nipples kinda make them, don't you think?

Diane's Breast Ever Drop Scone Recipe (makes 12)

  • 8oz plain (all purpose) flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 10 fl oz milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Optional to serve:Berries, Syrup, Butter, Jam, Cream.

This is so easy... sieve the dry ingredients together into a large bowl.  Add the egg and mix in. Then gradually stir in the milk to make a thick batter.

Then heat a little butter in a wide frying pan and gently 'drop' spoonfuls of the batter into the pan (spaced apart by about 1/2 inch).  When you see bubbles in the surface of the batter, flip with a spatula and fry until golden brown on both sides.  Serve while hot!

Now for the lecture, ladies!  Check your boobies...  If you're not sure how, check out this fabulous information poster provided by www.iheartguts.com (a quirky but amazing website!).
